Beyond Doughnuts

Desserts go beyond doughnuts at new Frost

Seattle has no shortage of excellent doughnuts, but the rotating flavors at Frost have made the Mill Creek shop a destination drive nonetheless. Now Frost has gone beyond the doughnut, opening an expanded “dessert lounge” at Mill Creek Town Center serving everything from a dozen daily cupcake flavors to macarons and galettes and wines by the glass. There’s also an espresso bar, with a blend roasted for the shop by Victrola.

Favorites on my recent trip were the frozen custard (soon to be served with doughnut chunks in a cannoli cone) and a doughnut bread pudding with a perfectly crisp top, so rich I wasn’t even tempted by the side of creme anglaise. The usual expansive arrays of plain-old doughnuts were in the cases too, if flavors like Butterfingers and Lime Margarita can ever be considered plain.

Dessert lounge is a fancy name and one that hasn't always fared well in Seattle, but candy-colored Frost still has a casual and kid-friendly atmosphere. The most welcome and grown-up addition to my eyes isn’t even the wine, it’s the hours — open until 10 p.m. every night.

Have you tried Frost’s creations? How do they stack up against the region’s other established favorites?
